Intentional Acts of Kindness – #6

Love That Feels Like Family

This Intentional Act of Kindness comes from Alexus Zacheis, a senior at Mascoutah High School.

Alexus is a natural leader—someone who steps up, serves wholeheartedly, and pours herself into the things she cares about. She’s involved in FBLA, has spent countless hours volunteering with Vacation Bible School, and brings a strong sense of purpose and compassion into every space she enters.

For her act of kindness, Alexus chose something deeply personal. She spent time visiting her favorite resident, Sue, at the Freeburg Care Center. Alexus previously worked there, and over time, Sue became much more than a resident—she became family. Alexus lovingly calls her “Grandma Sue,” and treats her just as she would her own grandmother.

During the visit, Alexus brought homemade cookies, shared conversation, and simply showed up with her presence. Sue told Alexus how excited she is to see her in her cap and gown at graduation, and Alexus promised she would come back to visit before leaving for college.

Alexus shared that it only took an hour out of her day—but it made Sue happy for the rest of it. That simple truth captures the heart of her kindness. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is our time, our attention, and the reminder that someone is deeply loved.

Alexus’s act reminds us that kindness doesn’t have to be complicated. It can look like a visit, a familiar face, homemade cookies, and love that feels like family.

We are so proud of Alexus for choosing connection, compassion, and care. ❤️
