Behind the scenes at The Hett

Yesterday our class had the privilege of visiting The Hettenhausen Center for the Arts at McKendree University — affectionately known as The Hett. We were welcomed by Director Michelle Magnussen and her husband Doug, who manages everything behind the scenes — from lighting and sound to rigging and stage production.

The Hett, officially the Russel E. and Fern M. Hettenhausen Center for the Arts, was founded as part of a capital campaign launched in 2001, which raised over $20 million to create a state-of-the-art performing arts center on the McKendree University campus — itself founded in 1828.

Michelle and Doug shared the story of The Hett and the incredible amount of work that happens both on and off stage. With only three full-time staff members, the rest of the crew is made up entirely of McKendree students, giving them hands-on experience in every aspect of theatre and event production. The Hett hosts around 200 events each year — from McKendree football meetings, alumni gatherings, and powerlifting competitions to concerts, camps, and dance recitals — along with about 20 major productions.

They work hand in hand with McKendree’s public safety, operations, and marketing departments to make sure every event runs smoothly. Our students were fascinated by the manual counterweight rigging system, amazed at the cost of just one stage curtain, and intrigued by the detailed research that goes into creating period-appropriate costumes for student productions. Touring the dressing rooms, props room, green room, and sound and lighting booths gave everyone a new appreciation for the precision and teamwork behind each show.

The Hett’s stunning lobby tells its own story, honoring the many benefactors whose generosity helped make this incredible space a reality.

As a husband-and-wife team, Michelle and Doug admitted that it can be hard not to talk about work even when they’re at home — but it’s clear that The Hett is their shared passion. They pour their hearts into this place, working long hours fueled by love for the arts, their students, and the community they serve.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, The Hett stands as a cornerstone of both culture and connection, offering a stage not just for performers, but for creativity, learning, and collaboration.

Thank you, Michelle and Doug, for opening your doors — and your hearts — to our Silver Creek Area CEO students. Your passion and dedication were a perfect reminder that great productions, like great businesses, depend on vision, teamwork, and a whole lot of heart behind the scenes.
