Begin with a BANG!!
The balloon pop that kicked off class on Tuesday wasn’t an accident. Our guest speaker, Katie Von Holdener, planned it that way—and it definitely got our attention.
Katie’s background is impressive: she’s owned a Christmas tree farm, rental properties, and has worked as an adjunct professor at McKendree and SWIC, and a freelance trainer covering everything from office behavior and customer service to Microsoft Office and DISC—just to name a few. But what really stood out wasn’t her résumé—it was how she connected with the students.
She shared some great public speaking tips like “begin with a bang” (literally!) and always memorize the first minute—no exceptions. She even suggested practicing in front of someone who will count your “umms” and “you knows.” Then do it again, focusing on pauses and confidence.
Katie also walked us through a DISC assessment, helping students understand their own personalities—and each other’s—a little better. She reminded us that when you overuse a strength, it can quickly turn into a weakness.
And her time management advice hit home:
• Make a daily to-do list
• Add minutes to each task—see if you’re overdoing it
• Identify your time wasters
• Do the hardest thing first (or use the “10-minute rule”)
• Find creative ways to use your time
Throughout the class, our students were fully engaged—asking questions, laughing at her stories, and soaking up the lessons. As they prepare for their class business, Katie’s insights on self-awareness, communication, and discipline will be invaluable.
A huge thank-you to Katie for sharing her time, energy, and wisdom with us—and for the healthy treats of bananas and cuties that kept everyone fueled and smiling all morning!
